What Does the Grateful Dead's bear represent?

Well I guess the full explanation can only come from the artist who originally penned it Owsley 'Bear' Stanley but I'll give it a stab. Bears are strong spirit animals associated with shamanic journeying so I suggest that's a good start given the Grateful Dead's reputation. Also bears are very much associated with Native American peoples and totally engrained into the whole North American culture. It's a comical, jovial bear, not to be taken seriously; a transformative figure which, I think, is relevant with the band and the whole culture around them.
